Of all industries it is the automotive industry that is one of the best examples of how management theory has developed and impacted on the commercial environment over the last century. This is one of the few industries where modern operations remain comparable to the former processes, making it the ideal industry for examining the development of management theory. Management theory cannot be considered without looking at the work of Taylor, which eventually impacted on the way Ford undertook production. Taylors ideas had their foundation in the work of Adam Smith and his Wealth of Nations which encompassed the idea of motivation, assuming the model of economic man and that it was financial gain that would motivate workers and it was financial reward which would allow employers to use the reward to motivate their workers (Haber, 1973). Taylor developed a model where jobs would be broken down into their basic component parts, the control was transferred from the worker to management and with a series of smaller tasks requiring less skill, undertaken in the one best way that was dictated by management. This also allowed for staff costs to be cut as there was no longer the need to employed skilled craftsmen, and if an employee left a replacement would be easy to train (Taylor, 1998). The development of Scientific Management was a major development, but today it is often seen in negative terms, partly due to the impact observed when it was introduced it had at the Ford plant. The management theory allowed more cars to be produced in a month than were formerly produced in a year, but this may also be seen as the start of the employee relations problems that have plagued many car manufacturers in the years ever since, especially ...
