Eucharist evolved--emanates from one particular Passover celebration. Since that time, Christians have embraced what occurred during that particular event as a sacrament. And while that is the case, the practice evolved and has been implemented quite differently dependent upon the era and the particular Christian sect. Western churches have learned lessons from those in the East in that the liturgical theology of Eucharistic communion is very important (Power, 1996). While many know this today, the history of the Eucharist, how it is incorporated into Roman Catholic masses, and how it has evolved over time, is rather interesting. Throughout history, the Eucharist has changed. What is the Eucharist and what is its history? The Eucharist is really the reenactment of the Last Supper when Christ told his followers that the bread was his body and wine was his blood. He instructed them to eat and drink and remember him. They did. But the Eucharist is more than a mere reminiscence. Rather, it helps man commune with God. In fact, the tradition is so important that the Eucharist is the central sacrament in the Catholic church today. In examining the historic roots, it is important to note that the Last Supper did not come out of nowhere. The Last Supper was something that came from the Jewish Passover Seder, but there is a great deal of history surrounding it. Clark (2000) explains that one can read about gatherings of the first Christians in the New Testament. It was when Paul would arrive at Troas during one of his missionary trips and would spend a week with the community of Christians there (2000).
