Computer hacking is the manner in which information is illegally obtained, and computer viruses attack the inner workings of each computer with which they come in contact, spreading like a disease from computer to computer. This causes one to question the ethics of hacking and spreading computer viruses. According to Bloombecker, computer crime should be regarded as a way in which to ferret out the weakest link in a computer system (Bloombecker 99). Although this may be the case, one particular example of computer hacking was shocking to many. It is the case of Neal Patrick. Patrick was a teenager when he "used a personal computer to gain access to more than 60 computer systems throughout the United States and Canada. His target included Los Alamos Nuclear Research Center, Security Pacific Bank in Los Angeles, and the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City" (99). When Patrick testified in front of a congressional subcommittee concerning computer security, he told them just how easy anyone could gain access to computers because of the blatant lack of security (99). Those in the meeting were happy to know of the possible risks from would be computer hackers (Bloombecker 99).
