Of course, one could hardly call the bloody revolution an incident. It was a true revolution, brought about by the people and one can clearly call their discontent a product of this new way of thinking. Finally, the people were no longer willing to take the abuse from the monarchy. They were fed up, but this was propelled, or at least exacerbated, by the Enlightenment. In delving into this issue, one has to wonder what other issues or instances were directly affected by this new trend in thinking. First, it is prudent to explore the Enlightenment itself. What was it exactly and why was it so important? The Enlightenment is a bit of an enigma as it is not easily defined. It was a part of history that encompassed much of the world and took place during the time when America was about to achieve independence. According to Hampson (1968) the Enlightenment period was a time when the culture of the educated was thought to encompass the whole of human knowledge. It was an exciting time in world history as well as in the United States. Some consider the Enlightenment to be a blanket term, defining one of several dominant intellectual movements in the eighteenth century (McLeish, 1993). Further, its roots can be traced back to earlier days such as the Reformation that occurred in the sixteenth century (1993). The early seventeenth century, in terms of intellectualism, was dominated by scripture and classics (Hampson, 1968).
