Communication, after all, permeates practically ever aspect of our lives. The typical student has come to the recognition quite early in their lives that good communication is a primary component of all social interaction. This communication can, of course , occur on a variety of levels and include both verbal and non-verbal components. In many aspects of our communication with one another, however, we find ourselves in a sort of performance mode, a mode through which our precise manner of communication shapes that specific period of time and circumstance. The student conducting even a brief review of the literature will discover that a number of researchers have explored the importance of communication in this regard. This research is, in actuality, quite consistent in the views which have been presented in the last half of the twentieth century. Even research which we might tend to dismiss as outdated presents a fascinating volume of information which can aid the student in many aspects of their contemporary academic, personal, and professional lives. By coupling this research with our own contemporary observations we can produce a valuable insight into the consistency of communication both over the generations and across cultural and ethnic divides.
