human beings, need oxygen to live and even fire needs oxygen to exist. It is a necessary element to life on earth. But, most people have little knowledge about the development of oxygen as it is used for numerous technological devices. The following paper examines some of the information available as to the history of the development of oxygen and discusses some of the uses of oxygen. Oxygen In understanding some of the basic elements of oxygen we note that "Oxygen is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol O and atomic number 8. The element is very common and ubiquitous, found not only on Earth but throughout the universe" (Wikipedia, 2004). It is also the most widely found, the most abundant, element on the crust of the earth. "Oxygen comprises about 87% of the oceans (as H2O, water) and 20% of the atmosphere of Earth (as O2, molecular oxygen, or O3, ozone). Oxygen compounds, particularly metal oxides, silicates (SiO44-) and carbonates (CO32-), are commonly found in rocks and soil" (Wikipedia, 2004). In addition, "Oxygen compounds are found throughout the universe and the spectrum of oxygen is often seen in stars" (Wikipedia, 2004). In terms of the uses of oxygen it is important to note that it "finds considerable use as an oxidizer, with only fluorine having a higher electronegativity. Liquid oxygen finds use as an oxidizer in rocket propulsion" as well as being essential to things such as "respiration, so oxygen supplementation has found use in medicine. People who climb mountains or fly in airplanes sometimes have supplemental oxygen supplies (as air)" (Wikipedia, 2004). Interestingly enough, it is also used in welding and in the production of steel and methanol. "Oxygen, as a mild euphoric, has a history of recreational use that ...
