to define. There are those who claim there is art and there is fine art, the two being very different. There are also those who feel that art is almost
anything the interpreter believes it to be. Some argue that Da Vincis Mona Lisa is true art and others may well claim that it is only art because of the
fact that in history only special people were trained to be artists and as such their work was always considered art, arguing it has little artistic value aside from its
historical significance. Art is ultimately a very personal and intricate reality. The following paper examines how the definition of art has changed throughout history and cultures. Today art is whatever
anyone deems to claim it is as it is a very personal thing. The Definition of Art People today look at, for example, art from ancient Greece without
the understanding that at the time it was made it was likely not considered art at all. It was likely a very commonly used item made by a craftsman. One
author notes, "Many of the objects we identify as art today -- Greek painted pottery, medieval manuscript illuminations, and so on -- were made in times and places when people
had no concept of art as we understand the term" (Department of Art History Sweet Briar College, 2008). They were likely items that were considered to be nothing more than
expressive objects. As humanity grew there came individuals who were ultimately trained to be artists, to provide art for patrons and the
Church. They were likely considered skilled craftsmen as well, or trained artisans, and it was at about this time that the word "art" began to be associated with paintings and
