This 10 page report discusses who was responsible for the shooting death of 22 year old Amadou Diallo, an immigrant from Guinea, in February of this year. The four police officers indicted for the killing have been charged with “intentional murder and murder with depraved indifference to human life.” Diallo had no criminal record and was, by all accounts, a devout, law-abiding Muslim who, in no way, provoked the attach in which 41 bullets were fired by the police, 19 of them hitting Diallo. Asking who or what was to blame for the killing is something of an exercise in futility. Numerous factors played equally important roles in the tragedy. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

He attended high school in Thailand, spoke five languages, and was extremely shy but he made it to New York City. A devout Muslim, he reportedly did not
smoke or drink. He had also asked his family elders to begin to arrange for him to have a suitable wife. He worked as a street vendor who sold
videos, CDs and tapes on E. 14th St. in Manhattan. He had finally saved enough money to begin college computer science classes late in February of this year. He
wont be attending the classes for which he had been registered. Standing in the doorway of his apartment building, apparently either coming from or going for something to eat,
New York police officers fired 41 times at him. He was hit by19 of those bullets. The American dream? Hardly! More like the American nightmare. There are always
those logical assertions that it was a terribly tragic mistake or that the police officers felt themselves to be in danger. None of which apply in the death of
Amadou Diallo. Anybody who has ever watched a police drama on television knows that familiar assertion that "he was going for his gun." But according to Nelson (1999) and
investigators, including federal agents, at the scene, all anybody found on his decimated body was his wallet and a beeper. And before the police could justify his murder because he
had a criminal record, its important to note Diallo did not. He had not been the target of any criminal investigation or involved with somebody who was.
