It is a passionate and sensual form of dance that came from Cuba, although the origins of the style concerning the music are far older and ultimately come from Africa. The following paper offers an overview of Salsa, the dance. The Dance of Salsa As one author notes, "Oozing with sensuous style, the passion and energy flowing about the dance floor as salsa dancers take to the scene is so contagious that you may certainly long to feel the liveliness they emit" (History of Salsa Dance, 2007). It is a partner dance, and one, as mentioned that has most of its foundations in Cuba. It is noted that, "Over the years, the sounds of salsa and the steps of the dance migrated to the U.S. as early as the 40s, where further cultivation took place in the New York City Latin population during the 1960 and 70s" (LatinGrooves.com, 2007). Yet, another author illustrates that Salsa came from one individual, as it relates to the United States and the music that seems to have started the movement. This author states, "a Cuban composer, Ignacia Pilerio, wrote a song to protest the lack of Cuban spices in the food he found in the United States" And, at the same time the Latin American community in Harlem began spicing "up the moves of Afro-Cuban dance rhythms, to add salsa to their moves" (LatinGrooves.com, 2007). As mentioned, however, the dance, and the music, as well as many other forms of dance and music, derived from African slaves who brought with them drum sounds and music.
