The Buddha accepted the idea of karma, and his path was called the Middle Way, which is something akin to the midpoint in life in society; it is a compromise between pleasure and the life of a rigorous ascetic (Mabbett, 2002). It is the opposite of for example, an extreme way where one would live life without pleasure or one would live a life with pleasure alone. Many know individuals who live life either way, at those extremes, but the Buddhist concept suggests moderation. And while the middle way is a fundamental buddhist precept, there are various sects of buddhism and each regards the middle way slightly different. In any event, the concept is rather matter of fact. Moderation in everything is a good way to live. The ideas to emanate from buddhism are simplistic concepts and it has arguably been developed centuries ago, but the concepts may be applied today. That said, one has to wonder just how much truth is contained in that statement. It does seem that some significant changes in the fabric of Buddhism had been necessary for its survival when it spread to other cultures. For example, its influence in China is great, but Kitagawa (1980) argues that it truthfully had not had a vital influence on the principles inherent in Chinese society. Buddhism began, as Kitagawa (1980) tells it, as a movement that was based in part on the formation of a community that is bound by conventions or rules. This is of course rather obvious. Whenever anything emanates, it comes from a society that already has conventions. As such, the introduction of new ideology must be incorporated with the culture at the time.
