- properly! Abstract: This report offers a brief overview of the counseling profession
and some of the current issues that affect it. Five articles are reviewed, which collectively indicate the scope and breadth of counseling, demonstrating that this profession encompasses a wide variety
of issues, concepts, practice modalities and practice settings. Experts have estimated that a form of depression affects somewhere between 10 and 25 percent of the population and it
has been identified by Murray and Lopez as the "number one cause of disability worldwide" (Paradise and Kirby, 2005, p. 116). Research data indicates that the incidence of depression is
roughly 10 times greater than it was in 1960 (Paradise and Kirby, 2005). This is the bad news. The good news, however, is the fact that depression is a problem
that is amenable to treatment and that counselors can choose between a variety of successful approaches to treating depression, selecting the approach that best suits their patients needs. However, due
to the near epidemic prevalence of depression, there is a corresponding need to focus on "training, research and practice" in regards to mood disorders in "both clinical and non-clinical populations"
(Paradise and Kirby, 2005, p. 116). Chope (2008) indicates that career counseling in regards to "multicultural, multi-ethnic and diversified populations" is an
ongoing and complex issue within the counseling profession. Chopes review of research conducted during 2007 identifies studies in which researchers call for counselors to be more sensitive to the issue
