The collapse of Tsarism began prior to World War I due to many different factors. Probably the most important factor in terms of the collapse of tsarism is that the monarchy did not respond at all to the needs of the people. The early 1900s was a very turbulent time in Russian history and the people were definitely ready for change. There were various movements within the country in opposition of the oppression which had been holding back the Russian people for a very long time. Various authors who have written on Russian history have arrived at similar conclusions about the collapse of the tsars in Russia. A Brief Summary of Russian Political History Russias demise of tsarism began during the 1903-1907 crisis in Russia (Lewin, 2002). Tsar Alexander III was an authoritarian, and was quite determined to carry out his ideas very strictly and methodically (Lewin, 2002). He believed his fathers liberal ideas to be frivolous and he highly disapproved of his fathers decisions (Lewin, 2002). In truth, what was needed in that country at that time was not authoritarianism, but a leader with warmth and compassion for the needs of the people and someone who was willing to unite the country based on more equality, not further separation (Lewin, 2002). Russia at this times was quite literally in "the throes of change that was breaking up the old order" (Lewin, 2002). Everyone was moving in different directions, with different ideas, trying to impose different ideologies, and the result was close to chaos (Lewin, 2002).
