will take another year or so, there are others who are seriously looking at the situation and claiming that the U.S. is really going about it all wrong because they lack the understanding of how warfare and conflict is changing due to the changes in civilization. Perhaps frighteningly enough, though also very realistically enough, Samuel P. Huntington states, "This centuries-old military interaction between the West and Islam is unlikely to decline. It could become more virulent."1 This is a very serious statement and something that everyone should stop and heed, especially anyone in the military who wishes to advance or somehow make the world a better place. The following paper argues that in light of Samuel Huntingtons theory of clashing civilizations military careers will be changing because "The fault lines between civilizations will be the battle lines of the future" as "the principal conflicts of global politics will occur between nations and groups of different civilizations."2 "The Clash of Civilizations": Military Service In the past nations have had a tendency to deal with any conflicts with the assumption that the nation was in ultimate control of the direction. With the growth and evolution and also the vague lines concerning civilizations, things are changing and this will seriously affect anyone who is in the military, making military duty less predictable and surely less victorious in issues such as Iraq. One of the reasons for this, as Huntington points out, is that civilizations are incredibly broad in terms of definitions and the people within those civilizations (even people who are immigrants in the United States) "can and do redefine their identities and, as a result, the composition and boundaries of civilizations change."3 This surely makes assessment of any civilization or people very tentative in terms of definition and military ...
