The result has been the gradual acceptance of the gay lifestyle into even the most conservative aspects of society. This paper notes the role of gay activists, the media, and technologies such as the Internet, in effecting this infiltration. Canadian society. While most of these inroads are being directed at factors of society such as the workplace, the Christian Church is beginning to feel the impacts as well.
Not only are these impacts being felt, however, subtle changes are being made within Church policy which reflect societys growing tolerance of homosexuality.
The last few decades have been charged with homosexual issues in Canada. Social policies concerning the rights of individuals with alternative sexual orientations, how these individuals are dealt
with by society, have changed considerably over time. There is even considerable contrast in the policies between the Conservative Era of the 1950s and the present time, time periods
separated only by a few generations from one another. During the Conservative Era society perceived alternative sexual orientation in a myriad of ways. Most often, however, those who
differed from the mainstream are viewed either in a comical light or as threats to mainstream society. Even today, heterosexuals are typically viewed as normal and homosexuals as personifying
a type of deviant behavior. Never-the-less, both public and church policy is changing to be more receptive the practice. Such was not the case just a few years
ago in Canada. The Conservative Era was an era exemplified by a societal policies which emphasized family and religion (Garrett, 1998). Individuals
who expressed alternative sexual orientations such as homosexuals were viewed as a threat to both family and religion. Consequently numerous social policies were put in place which penalized those
whose views differed from mainstream values. Over the last twenty years in particular, however, these penalties have been eroded to the point of practical non-existence. Societal and Church
