to exist well into the future. The question, "what causes crime" has been answered in as many ways as there are people offering their opinion on the matter. Theories range from theological in nature (crime is a sin), to psychological (crime is the result of repressed feelings), and everything in between. In all likelihood, the "real" cause of crime is likely some combination of all the theories. To reduce all crime to one theory or one explanation would be to significantly oversimplify the problem. Furthermore, the end result would be a serious injustice, since such a blanket explanation would easily put the matter to rest but the inaccuracy of the judgment would solve nothing. Therefore, it is important to be realistic in the attempt to answer this question, as the answer will largely determine solutions. To oversimplify this matter or reduce crime to a singe explanation would necessarily exclude a plethora of effective solutions to the matter. The truth is that crimes are committed by different individuals, all who come to their experience and activity of crime with their own ideas, beliefs, values, backgrounds, racial identities, cultural perceptions, religious ideals, moral codes, and more. Clearly then such diversity necessitates a diverse explanation in response. So many factors contribute to determining what constitutes crime as well as what causes such crimes, that it becomes important and necessary to explore each with some degree of seriousness.
