Soothsayers and cult leaders claim the changes in the weather, the increase in natural disasters, the number of man-made disasters all point to the fulfillment of the prophecies found in the Book of Revelation. Belief in biblical prophecy dates back to 17th-century England but the direct antecedent of modern American prophecy belief can be found in 19th-century England and the rise or premillenialism, the belief that Jesus Christ would return to Earth after years of dramatic crises and He would then establish a kingdom that would last for 1,000 years, a time of peace. At the end of that time would come the Last Judgment and that would end history as we have come to know it. This belief has its foundation in three specific books in the Bible: the Books of Ezekiel and Daniel in the Old Testament and the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. This belief system found a great following in America, in fact, President Reagan said that he believed that the Soviet Union would invade Israel at the end of time; this belief is based on the Book of Ezekiel which refers to Israel being invaded from the north (Sanoff 73). There have been numerous world events that have played a role in reinforcing and popularizing prophecy belief.
