was a time when some towns lost as many as one half of their population, and it is often estimated that upwards of over a third of the entire European population was lost to the black plague. It was never cured and only seemed to run its course, though it would resurface time and time again, causing panic once more. The following paper examines two works which discuss the plague, Barbara Tuchmans "This is the End of the World" and Daniel Defoes "The Journal of a Plague Year." The Black Plague According to Tuchman, there were essentially two forms of the plague, or two separate ways to get it and show symptoms. One was through buboes, a manner in which the plague was seen physically through these huge boil like objects found in such places as the armpits of the affected. The other form was lung related and it was the one that surely killed any it touched. Some with buboes actually lived to survive. Defoe mentions this in his work. This particular reader/writer recently watched a documentary about the plague and there are records of one doctor in particular who contracted the buboes and then came out alive and well, moving on to do more research concerning a disease he was now apparently immune to. It is interesting and informative to note that Tuchman and Defoes work exist in very different centuries. Tuchmans is a look at the plague from a modern perspective, based on centuries of information that has been compiled since the dreaded black plague. Defoes work exists in a time when much was known about the plague, but it was still considered to be a serious threat in a world that did not have all the advancements we have today.
