concrete and steel inspire awe in some, but even those most attached to the sterility that they refer to as "crisp, clean lines" must be impressed by the old-world majesty of the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida. Those who prefer Victorian styles can only stare in amazed appreciation. Its 315-foot central tower still the visual focus of the hotel, today the Biltmore serves the same upper-end clientele it attracted in the past. History The Biltmore was built in 1926, at the height of the "discovery" of Florida and during some of the best economic times the country had ever known. The hotel stands alone even today, flanked only by its own golf course and the largest pool of any hotel in the continental US. Acres of green surround it; even after nearly 80 years, there are no shops or restaurants nearby. Town is only a short drive away, and certainly south Florida holds a wealth of attractions. Those who come to the Biltmore can seek out those places, of course, but the hotel also stands as a self-contained resort. This was the way the Biltmore began life in the 1920s. Offering both privacy and four-star service, the Biltmore attracted those who craved each, including the "Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Ginger Rogers, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Al Capone and assorted Roosevelts and Vanderbilts" (History, 2005). The hotel continued in this way until the advent of World War II, when the War Department converted the Biltmore into a hospital.
