This 16 page paper is an in-depth examination of Vittorio de Sica’s Italian neorealist film Ladri di biciclette (1948), based on the novel by Luigi Bartolini. This is also known as The Bicycle Thief in the US and the Bicycle Thieves in the UK. The film is examined in terms of its’ cinematic detail, looking at the general approach to the film with the style and values of neo-realism, followed by the more specific detail of the films scenes, including filming techniques, the use of cameras, locations actors and the framing of social issues within the film. and the media, it is the film itself, not only the neo-realism genre, but the entire presentation that brings a strong presence to the screen which justifies the interpretation of
neo-realism as more then merely a genre, but a social message and a communication that exceeds the conventions of genre alone. The Bicycle Thief, directed by Vittorio de Sica,
based on a novel by Luigi Bartolini, is often cited as a ground breaking film, one that illustrated realism for the definition of film theory, and with the numerous citations
that are made referring to this work there is the impression of the influence and importance of this work (Roberts and Wallace, 2002, Phillips, 2001, Rocchio, 1999). The film
is a characteristic example of neo-realism, and in studying the film and its presentation, looking at key themes and aspects if cinematography, such as lighting, sound, framing and angles as
well as behaviour of the characters, the student needs to first consider how and why this film is a typical and influential example of neo-realism in the holistic sense
and then examine this with reference to particular scenes and frames in the film. Therefore, this paper will look not at neo-realism as a genre, but the way in which
the director has used different techniques and direction that have resulted in this particular film being neo-realism. It is only from within the context that the importance and relevance of
