The statement is intriguing, and much more profound than it might appear, because it goes to the heart of why people go to the trouble and expense of attending college
in the first place. While some people go to school to party and others go in the hope of meeting their future spouse, most go to learn. And
when they realize that theres much more they dont know than they do, its an amazing experience. College-age young people have several characteristics in common: they think theyre
invulnerable and will never die, and they also think they know much more than they do. Thus, when they come up against something outside their experience, it can be
a strange moment. But its also an opportunity to cast aside preconceived ideas, and discover a whole world of ideas, theories and concepts theyve never considered before. It
could be that its that moment that defines the beginning of knowledge: the realization that there is a tremendous amount of information with which theyre not familiar, and which they
will have to work to assimilate. Not understanding something is nothing to be ashamed of, but many people would rather sit silent than raise their hand and ask questions.
Admitting ignorance is really the first step to learning, because it removes all false expectations: the student will not put too much pressure on himself, and the professor will not
