was the latest entertainment art form. The furniture and architectural styles were mundane. In the past, the deco decade and the fifties style homes were also reminiscent of the eruption of suburbia. Throughout the United States, tract homes were built and communities began to look much the same around the country. Things began to become modern, but there was no art in many of these structures. Still, artistic influences from the past as well as influences in the decade itself were extraordinary. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a significant influence not just due to the effects of his architecture on modernism, which was refined with his pure style, but also due to the effect it had on society. He was born in 1886 in middle Europe (Andersen 77). His interesting name is really a meld of his mothers maiden name Rohe although he kept the German Mies as well, a term which loosely translates to "lousy" (77). Many refer to him just as Mies. A German architect, he preceded modern architecture with his innovative designs for tubular-steel furniture, for example, and the use of and steel and glass to create skyscrapers ("Mies van der Rohe, Ludwig " PG). He soon achieved international fame and when he moved to America in 1937, where he founded and directed the architecture department at the Armour Institute in Chicago (PG). He was integral to the radical transformation of architecture during the 1920s and 1930s (Andersen 77). He left Germany to go to Chicago prior to the advent of the Nazi era (77).
