Earths history has been divided, by paleontologists, into three time periods: the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic. Dinosaurs lived during the Mesozoic period of earths development. The Mesozoic period has been divided further into the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. Dinosaurs lived during the latter part of the Triassic Period through the end of the Cretaceous Period. For approximately 165 million years the dinosaur was the ruling animal on this planet. It is the job of the paleontologist to piece together the information that remains from these earlier times to form theories and provide information about these animals of the past. The student may want to include a discussion of the interrelatedness of humans and the animal and plant species that have formed the existing ecosystem in terms of the need to learn more about the past. this can then be related back to the dinosaurs and the value of knowing what might have preceded them in the evolutionary chain. It must be understood that the basic tenet of an environmental ethic is the determination of the value of nature and, or, species other than human.
