American history is written from a Eurocentric perspective. It should also be said that Loewen writes about history books in general, and the way that history is taught. The title
of the work is quite provocative. However, when examining a couple of books on American history, it seems as if the authors point of view is no longer valid. That
is, more contemporary history books are treating African Americans, Native Americans and other groups rather fairly. One example of the treatment of disenfranchised groups by Eric Foner in his work
Forever Free appears to be adequate in describing facts with historical accuracy. He covers issues related to slavery and writes about black people and their problems. Unlike revisionist history books
that paint a clean picture, and treat slavery as necessary and the norm, Foner questions such a position. W.E.B. DuBois points out that George Washington owned slaves, but that part
is glossed over2. In Forever Free, Foner does go into detail about the problem of slavery and accentuates the difficulties that African Americans faced. Foner explains that by the time
the Savannah Colloquy would come around, slavery was already an institution3. He explains that while slavery as an institution was normal in many parts of the world, and has a
long history, the enslavement of Africans at this juncture was different4. In general, there are places such as Africa that condone slavery, but they often enslave criminals or debtors5. Foner
