Many of these innovations have resulted in the ever increasing pressure to feed the world’s masses and to provide certain products which are of pharmaceutical or industrial use. Many of these innovations have resulted in the ever increasing pressure to feed the worlds masses and to provide certain products which are of pharmaceutical or industrial use. The worlds population is growing at a phenomenal rate. At the same time the lands which are available for agricultural production are shrinking. This leaves us with far too many people to feed and less and less area to do it with (Small, 1999). The only hope in meeting this goal is to utilize the latest advancements in science which allow the genetic manipulation of the plant and animal species which comprise our food and technological innovations in pest control and other arenas of agriculture. Selective breeding has been a component of agriculture for centuries. This practice has become even more refined in the last few years, however. The selective breeder has at their disposal genetic crosses, selection, mutations, and tissue culture as well as the more advanced technique of genetic transformation (Blechl, 1998). In tissue culture one of the parents of a cross is only distantly related to the other parent (Blechl, 1998).
