In her essay, My Hips, My Caderas, Valdes examines how in the everyday lives of millions of American women with a mixed Latina heritage make subconscious choices based on centuries of colonialistic thought. Colonialism is never called invasion, or suppression when it occurs. As a type of political correctness, colonialism was often touted as being for the better good of the indigenous peoples. What in actuality this meant was that the invading nation believed that they stood a good chance of taking the land and the resources because they possessed superior technology as opposed to the existing culture. A major theme in her essay is that human identity is in part defined by ones cultural ethnicity, and that knowledge of ones ancestry helps a person define their human identity. In this respect, then, there are a number of metaphors which are woven and wafted around the words, serving to further illustrate this push and pull of modern versus traditional. She states that as a young girl she made choices which were based consciously on what appealed to her, without examining the reason that certain things appealed to her. In other words, she found herself choosing to study French instead of Spanish and turned down dates from Latino boys, preferring the blue eyed blondes instead. However, looking back she sees now that these selections that she was making was a part of a subconscious and ingrained acceptance of colonialism at its roots. Colonialism replaced the indigenous culture by suffusing it with its own culture. This occurred in many ways, but most of them were by force, regardless of geography.
