To that end the goal of much of his work was to simply entertain, amuse and were not built so much to inform or provoke deep insightful thought. This is not to say that he did not write works of significance. In fact, his style was and still is so definitive as to earn him distinction from other writers and has served to influence writers countless generations after him. However, one should not allow the young-ish spirit of the pieces to cloud ones mind to the classical elements that are still an integral part. The elements of rhythm, meter, imagery, setting are but a few of the elements that can still be found in his poems and his novels. The imagery in Jabberwocky is brillig (brilliant), and is intended, one could say, to capitalize on the ready imaginations of the child to grasp it and to bring it to life in their minds eye. Twas brillig and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe(Carroll, 4). It can be said, too, that the only way to understand a nonsense poem is to not try to understand it at all. In other words, reading the poem outloud, rather than reading it to oneself, is an easier way to understand the purpose of the poem. At once, meant to entertain, it has the greatest effect when read out loud. The syntax and semantics of the lines, even if one does not understand the nonsense words, sometimes come clearer when heard and not merely read. This is a great example of Carrolls style.
