or actions. Martin Luther King, Jr. was such a man. Along the same lines was his counter-part, Malcolm X, whose conversion to Islam gave him the direction that he sought in tackling the problems of segregation and civil rights for people of color. Luther and Malcolm did have several things in common. The both strove for equality for all men under the law and they both used as their foundation certain beliefs grounded and found in their religious doctrines. The fact that both men were influenced so heavily by their respective religions would suggest that if one were to understand the man or the mind, then one must explore the conversion and religious experience of the man. Malcolm Xs conversion to Islam was not an overnight decision. However, after weighing what he thought were the options, the Nation of Islam seemed to serve his purpose and align closer to his personal goals. It can be said that Malcolm was a dark presence, an angry, cynical, implacable man whose good will or forgiveness or even pity the white race could neither earn nor buy. Nonviolence was as he put it, "a mealy-mouth, beg-in, wait-in, plead-in kind of action," and it was only a device for disarming the blacks. He also believed that everything we had heard to the contrary from the Martin Luther Kings and the Roy Wilkinses and the Whiteny Youngs was a deadly dangerous pack of lies (Goldman, 1970, pg.5). "There is nothing in our book, the Koran, that teaches us to suffer peacefully," he is reported as saying. "Our religion teaches us to be intelligent.
