into the patient/nurse relationship and how the lines between them can be blurred, thus creating a dilemma. Nurses are often called upon to provide comfort where there seems to be
none, patience in the face of adversity, and grace under fire. Their courage in the face of the day to day routine and in the face of dealing primarily with
those who are unwell can be said to be a high calling. Such is the crisis facing Hana. The setting is Italy at the end of World War II. The
English patient, a terribly burned man (who has been diagnosed as a hopeless case) grows too ill to be moved when the order comes to evacuate the hospital. Hana, a
young nurse, volunteers to stay behind with him. It becomes clear that she must gather data about his condition and in the end, she manages to find a book in
his effects. It is an old leather bound book and she begins to read to him from it. As she does, and with the aid of the Morphine she gives
him, he begins to remember the earlier, happier times of his life. What happens is that early one, perhaps because she is alone in this make shift hospital by herself
and two other men beside her patient, she becomes drawn to the patient, though not in a romantic way. She devotes nearly her entire time to him as she heals
her own inner wounds that the war has produced. Herein lies part of the dilemma. She knows that he is going to die. She knows from her medical training that
he is suffering excruciating pain. There is no one around to fault her if she gives him an overdose of morphine, but if she does, can she live with the
