downtown Jacksonville the very building itself has tales to tell. However, the building and its many housed works of art are not the only attractions that this museum boasts. The grounds and the plantings are as astounding as many of the works of art inside its walls. The Cummer boasts nearly two acres of formal and historic gardens. Originally, the museum was a residence and was later donated to the city. Many of the gardens were originally designed by Mrs. Cummer, and later one additional garden was done by a Mrs. Shipman several decades later(Cummer, 2003). The first garden is the Upper Garden. The original home which sat at this location was a Tudor-style home. Mrs. Cummer was not originally from Florida, but from Indiana(Cummer, 2003). So, when she moved into her new Florida home she wanted to surround herself with some of the plants from her native Indiana. Many of her original attempts to cultivate plants from the north in the rough southern climate failed. However, after some trial and error she managed to find several plants that would adapt quite nicely. Some of the plants in the garden include the Agapanthus plant, also called Lilies of the Nile. These plants were quite rare during the 1900s and as such it is a testament to Mr. Cummers dedication to his wifes hobby that he procured them for her. Now, of course, these Lilies of the Nile grow in wild abandon. Their blue blossoms form a dense blue carpet in mid-May and compliment the dogwood trees, hydrangeas and camellias(Cummer, 2003).
