Clark, art historian, is considered to be "one of the most important figures in the development of social, as well as the new, art history."1 In his text Image of the People, Gustave Courbet and the 1848 Revolution, Clark asserts that in the mid-nineteenth century, "the State, the public and the critics" were in consensus that "art had a political sense and intention."2 Due to this widespread societal assumption, "painting was encouraged, repressed, hated and feared."3 Artists, such as Courbet and Daumier, not only exploited this assumption, but even enjoyed it.4 As these statements suggest, Clark situates Courbet within the sociopolitical milieu of his era, as he proposes that the key to understanding the social history of art in nineteenth century France is to view it through the prism of the art.
