level of power being wielded by an external power, whereas others have seen the level of profit and benefit that can be benefited from the production of oil. Bringing in
hard currency to third world countries such as Kenya, and many of the south American countries. However, for the more traditional oil producing countries we see a heavier reliance on
the oil for income as a source of exports. One of these countries, that is lesser known that others is that of Syria. Here 65% of the exports are made
up of oil and petroleum products (CIA, 2002). If we are going to consider the oil industry in relationship to Syria we first need to consider the oil industry and
its development. The time before the well known cartel of OPEC, the development of this cartel and the way that the industry as a whole have changed over time. The
changes in oil prices and the different industrial models we may see in operation. Syria was not a founding member of OPEC, yet as a major force in the industry
