the difficult interactions between mothers and daughters. This paper discusses the symbolism in three of her stories, and what it tells us about the struggles between mother and daughter. Discussion The first story is "Rules of the Game" by Waverly Jong. Its a deceptively simple work: Waverly learns that the way to succeed in life is to be quiet and play by the rules. One Christmas, there is a grab bag at the church, and one of Waverlys brothers wins a chess set (Tan, 1990). The childrens mother Lindo tries to throw it away because its used, but the boys want to keep it; Lindo relents and the boys play, and soon teach Waverly the game (Tan, 1990). She learns it quickly and begins to play competitively, which her mother supports, for her own reasons (Tan, 1990). But her mother, who doesnt know the game, also tries to tell Waverly how to play and takes the credit for her success (Tan, 1990). Chess in this story is a symbol of the struggle between mother and daughter. The game is disciplined, difficult, and requires players to think several moves ahead. Because Waverly is a champion at it and her mother cannot play, the power in this contest lies with Waverly. But her mother is jealous of the girls success (not an unusual reaction), and so seeks to take the credit for Waverlys achievement herself (Tan, 1990). Because chess symbolizes Waverlys power and control over her own life, she is rightly disturbed when her mother watches her practice: she is attempting to take the girls power from her.
