It is important for the student to know that the U.S. Constitution inherently provides authority for the federal government to control interstate commerce as a means by which to ensure the passage of goods from state to state is accomplished with as few disruptions as possible. Following this the Justice would move into the reasons behind this support. One area in particular that a Supreme Court Justice would support the continuation of congressionally controlled interstate commerce is that of firearm acquisitions. It is important for the student to understand that in an ideal world, firearms would remain only within the realm of law enforcement officials; however, the infiltration of guns into the seedier criminal underworld has created a situation that police cannot begin to contain. As a result, guns are falling into the wrong hands, ultimately being used as power weapons in such crimes as drive-by shootings, minor altercations and myriad other random acts of violence. For these reasons, the Supreme Court Justice would believe that it is imperative for Congress to continue governing the activities of interstate commerce as a means by which to control - as much as possible - the transportation of firearms across state lines. "Its no secret that criminals and minors will do the easiest thing they can in order to get guns" (Vertuno PG).
