an Integration of Research and Practice by Patricia Dunkel published in the Fall 1991 issue of TESOL Quarterly is an interesting and informative article that reviews the research that has taken place on native and second language listening in terms of language acquisition, comprehension and its role in a curriculum. This paper is a summary oft the main points of this lengthy paper that has a total of 97 sources. The summary is broken down into the same sections and the original paper. 1. Listening in the native language: problems of definition and operationalization. The paper begins with a quote from Locke that considers the nature of language in order to communicate, with the use of words needing not only to be used to communicate but the need for the listener to be able to hear exactly the same idea that the talker is trying to communicate. This is seen as very pertinent today, more that 300 years after Locke considered the use of communication, with the need to understand how the mental processes create meaning out of the words that are heard. Locke has not been the only historical figure to look at these issues of basic human understanding, theorists such as Aristotle and Saint Augustine also considered the same subject as did Hobbes and the Port Royal grammarians. The learning and use and comprehension of listening to a second language has been of interest to communication scholars and psychologists for many year, it is also of increasing interest to those who teach second languages.
