The study of statistics has been in existence long enough that Mark Twain could observe in the 19th century that there are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics. Statistics provides a means of analyzing research data that would be difficult if not impossible to analyze otherwise, but it also has direct applicability to daily life and business. Accuracy has always been important in any numerical measure of any quality, but it has approached a critical nature now. As business has become hypercompetitive in the past decade, businesses of all types - both within and outside of health care - have found themselves with less "wiggle room" than ever before. The purpose here is to identify statistical analyses approaches that can best enable the outpatient ambulatory surgery center to improve operations. Quantitative Information Available from Official Records An outpatient ambulatory surgery center should have electronic records chronicling the time required for patients journey through the center. These time records should include originating time; elapsed time between stages of the process of treating the patients; and the time at which the patient was released from the surgery center. Release from the center most often will be in the form of official permission to return home, but it also will include the time at which some patients are released from the center to be admitted to the hospital.
