He is quite simply the greatest playwright in the English language, and although there are some lesser works, most of the plays are stunning and as relevant now as they were when he wrote them. A Midsummer Nights Dream is particularly appealing on a technical level because it offers so many possibilities for differing productions. On an emotional level it is a good choice because it gives an audience a true escape from the problems we face today. With Iraq a shambles, gas prices going through the roof, the upcoming election reaching new lows in dirty campaigning and other societal problems making headlines every day, it is a blessing to be able to go to the theater for a night of pure pleasure. But Shakespeare grounds the comedy in life; he gives it a slightly melancholy undertone as he does with all his comedies, but that only makes it funnier. Here the relationship between Theseus and Hippolyta is prickly. She doesnt want to be simply a wife, but a person in her own right. This resonates with many women today, and helps to keep the play from floating off into fairyland entirely. Likewise, when Egeus says that his daughter Hermia will either marry the man he has chosen, Demetrius (whom she does not love), enter or convent or be put to death, he is entirely serious. His harshness toward Hermia and Lysander, as well as the bickering between Theseus and Hippolyta, form a sort of boundary around the enchanted woods where Titania, Oberon and the rest of the fairies live.
