Sims (1999) said: "Managers who severely underestimate the effort necessary to launch teams successfully are setting up their organizations for failure" (p. 156). Much thought and planning must be done to assure successful teams. Hutchens Resnik & Associates (2001) wrote: High performance teams do not just evolve, but rather [they are the] products of management providing the leadership, definition of goals, clarification of roles and an infrastructure that promotes effective interaction, not only between team members, but with other operational areas, and senior management itself. A team is defined as: "a collection of individuals who exist within a larger social system such as an organization, who can be identified by themselves and others as a team, who are interdependent, and who perform tasks that affect other individuals and groups" (Steward, Manz and Sims, 1999, p. 3). A collection of individuals, however, will not become a functioning effective team until it goes through certain steps. All groups go through a developmental process before they become a cohesive group and an effective team. In 1965, Tuckman found that teams typically go through five stages of growth he identified as forming, storming, norming, performance and adjournment (p. 384). Subsequent theorists have assigned different names to each of the stages and some have even offered four or six stages instead of five but they all reflect Tuckmans original premise. The five stages are: * Forming - the time when the group first comes together. This is a time of introduction, of getting to know each other. It is a time of discovering what behavior is acceptable in this group. This is the stage of transition from individual to member of a group.
