Hadith 254 (Islam) The unique and compassionate nature of St. Francis was extraordinary even to his fellow Franciscan Friars. It is said that St. Francis would not even "allow the flame of a candle to be snuffed out" (McFadden PG) in honor of the creation of the flame by God. St. Francis removed even the worms from his path so that they might not be crushed, and almost all of us have heard of the birds flocking to him when he preached his message of love and regard for those made in the image of God Himself. St. Francis took compassion to a deeper level than most others of his kind; for this reason he was an even greater influence on Christianity than were his brothers. St. Francis taught that all of gods creations are worthy of respect and love, and that none should be destroyed lest we destroy that that is made by the hand of the Lord. He had a "genuine humility" (McFadden PG) which came from the author of all creation himself, it is said, and taught this to as many as he could reach. Not everyone of his time believed in this sort of compassion. There were those who professed to be Christians who simply refused to believe that all things were worthy of this sort of honor.
