need to measure speed is no longer one of curiosity, but of nessesity. Timetables for the transportation of goods and are formulated assuming certin speeds are attained, and in
many cases speed needs to be monitored to ensure legal and safe limits are not exceeded. There are various methods of achieving this, but the speedometer is the most popular.
A speedometer is an instrument which measures the speed of transit of a vehicle, for example cars, aeroplanes, boats and trains. Various
types exist, based either on measuring the revolutions made by the engine or by the passage of the medium through which the vehicle moves (water or air).
The first wide spread use of a speedometer was as a governor to James Watts revolutionary Steam engines in the late 18th century. The
central characteristic of this speedometer was a permanent magnet, rotated by its connection to the drive via a cable. The magnet causes a drum to drag, in turn the drum
is restrained by a spring, controlling the readout needle. The magnetic forces can be demonstrated by scattering iron filings on a sheet of card under which the magnet is held;
the filings are attracted to the lines of force. This was a reliable form of speed measurement for its time, however for the modern world, although simple in design, improvements
