Spanish Explorers in the New World It was during the Renaissance and the Elizabethan eras in Europe that saw the emergence of the Age of Exploration which was, in the beginning, primarily controlled by Spanish explorers.1 "The Renaissance saw the success of the Spanish explorers in acquiring monopolies on much of the Eastern spice trade and their expeditions to the New World brought great wealth and power to Spain."2 These explorers were successful in bringing in great wealth through silver and gold and spices, but they were also successful in brining influence and power to Spain, as well as themselves.3 In relationship to why they set out to discover and explore the following reasons are noted: "Wealth - gold, silver and spices, Power, Prestige, Increasing opportunities for Spanish trade, Spreading the Catholic Religion, Building a Spanish Empire."4 Another author indicates that they were driven by what is called the three Gs which were gold, glory, and gospel.5 The first exploration that is often noted is that of Christopher Columbus which was supported by Queen Isabella I.6 "In 1492 the King and Queen of Spain financed the voyage of Christopher Columbus to America, the New World. In 1494 all of the lands in the New World were claimed by Spain."7 According to another author Columbus made 4 voyages between 1492 and 1504.8 "The Spanish explorers encountered three major civilizations in the New World: the Incas in present-day Peru and the Mayans and Aztecs in Mexico ...
