"La Monjita Mexicana," or "The Little Mexican Nun" (Booth ppg) . Perhaps the most important and difficult choice Sor Juana ever made was
to become a nun. She chose to become a nun not because of a strong devotion to God, but as a way to escape the common role of marriage, and
have some freedom of choice in her life. Sor Juana was honest about her intentions when entering the convent, never claiming that it was a vocation, "I became a nun
because although I knew that that way of life involved much that was repellent to my nature-I refer to its incidental, not its central aspect-nevertheless, given my total lack of
desire to be married, it was the least unreasonable and most becoming choice I could make to assure my ardently desired salvation" (Booth ppg).
Sor Juana claims this choice was made to "assure her ardently desired salvation, " however we should keep in mind this was not a time when women were "allowed"
to be responsible for their own lives, much less make a move towards self-education - in other than the "household" arts. Because she was illegitimate and had
no father to pay a dowry, few choices were available to her. Juana could be the wife of a poor man, the mistress of a rich man, or enter into
the convent and become a nun. For Sor Juana, her "ardently desired salvation" included art, music, the theater, and stimulating intellectual discourse. It is ironic that life
