what they do in their lives. Society is the institution that protects people and keeps them safe and as such people will follow the traditions and rules of a society in order to feel safe. But, there are also times when people stray from the demands or expectations of society in order to feed their own identity and in order to feed their souls. With that in mind the following paper examines how society shapes the behavior of the characters in Anton Chekhovs short story The Lady with the Dog. Society in Chekhovs The Lady with the Dog In first looking at this story it is perhaps important to note something of the author and his place in 19th century literature. One author notes how Chekhovs "short stories and plays used Realism in a much more understated way" than other Russian authors (Brians). His "works are often seen as the last echo of a fading tradition before Stalinism made socialist realism into a suffocating orthodoxy" (Brians). This helps the reader understand something of the social environment of his time and also helps one understand his work in relationship to Russian literature in general, which has often been seen as complex, diverse, and very mysterious in many ways as the Russian culture has long remained something of a mystery as well. Even despite the seemingly mysterious nature of Russian literature, it is clear that Chekhovs realism is something that reaches beyond culture in this particular story. The 19th century was a time when men and women of some wealth were socially responsible and in essence, were faithful to their spouses.
