However, there are problems in terms of financial planning for retirement, as well as unrealistic expectations for the future. Very few, if any, of the boomers can expect or do expect the kinds of retirement they saw their own parents and family members embrace. It is unlikely that guided tours across Europe, sunbelt mobile home parks, or senior citizen cruises will be as popular in the next twenty years as they have been in the past twenty years! The baby boom generation is estimated to consist of approximately 77 million Americans, representing fully one-third of the current population of the United States. In 1996, the first of the baby boomers reached the age of 50. Such an occurrence served as something of a wake-up call for the peace, love, and tie-dye generation that once demanded that their peers "trust nobody over thirty." By virtue of the fact that there are such a large number of boomers, they have, in many ways, set the tone and mindset of the United States for the past fifty years, its no wonder that government, futurists, and the boomers themselves are concerned about the force by which their generation will affect the "golden years." The baby boomers will undoubtedly re-write the ways in which retirement is thought of and lived. According to McCune (1998), there are just too many of them, and they are saving far too little and living too long to lead self-sufficient and prosperous post-work lives.
