According to the Pope who recently acknowledged the prominent role of globalization in terms of the worlds social order, globalizations "prime characteristic is the increasing elimination of barriers to the movement of people, capital and goods" (The Catholic Church and Globalization, 2003). Due to huge advancements in technology, the Internet, and the ability of businesses to quickly and efficiently operate from anywhere in the world, we have most certainly become a global community. Furthermore, its interesting to note just how quickly this has all happened. Todays college students have parents who knew nothing about the Internet or computers growing up, knew nothing about VCRs, CDs, Cable television, and so forth. So much of what we take for granted in todays world is actually so new. Additionally, we have nearly instant access to the events of the world. If something newsworthy happens in a small German village, within minutes it is going to be on the multitude of news stations which broadcast internationally. Within minutes literally the world could know about the happening. Never before has this been possible. With this globalization has come significant changes in society and the social structure. For example, families used to all live together in the same community for the most part, and as children married, they would likely buy homes and raise families in that same neighborhood, creating close-knit family units.
