are both sports that are generally associated with Great Britain and the United States, but yet are two sports that have really influenced and transformed areas in Latin American culture as well. They serve as perhaps the two most globally influential sports on the face of the earth as they involve national identity and popularity. While soccer is obviously far more of a global sport than baseball, both have clearly affected and influenced the development of identity in Latina American countries. With such perspectives in mind, the following paper examines the history of soccer, and its importance and history in Brazil. The paper then examines the history and importance of baseball in Central America, with a focus on Nicaragua where baseball is incredibly popular and has become a lasting part of the culture. History of Soccer In terms of very ancient history there is documentation that the Chinese military played a game involving kicking a ball into the net back in the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC (Hutchison, 2006). There has been evidence found that also indicates Japan had a similar game, and even the Greeks and Romans had a similar type game, "although in this early version, teams could consist of up to 27 players!" (Hutchison, 2006). In light of the fact that similar games were played, in ancient times, all around the world, it is somewhat difficult to accurately claim when or where soccer was actually invented however it is generally assumed the sport has been around in some form for more than 3000 years (Hutchison, 2006).
