One of the primary elements in the novel, however, is the element or theme of death. Often, throughout the novel, the main character Billy Pilgrim notes "So it goes" in relationship to death. It is also the title of a song by Unearth. The following paper examines the relationship between the two and how they are both works that can be analyzed concerning views on death, views that seem to simply accept that this is the way of life. . So It Goes: Vonnegut and Death No one can argue that death does not touch everyone at some time in their life. Everyone will die. That is a fact. Just as everyone is born everyone will die and in Vonneguts work this is seen as truth without any sense of dismay, something that can be gleaned in the song as well. For example, in Vonneguts novel he states, "Everybody was killed but Billy. So it goes. While Billy was recuperating in a hospital in Vermont, his wife died accidentally of carbon- monoxide poisoning. So it goes" (31). As one critic notes it does not matter if many are killed or one very close personal individual was killed, the truth was that "so it goes" and thus there is a sense of acceptance without sorrow. In the song the author notes, "Will you fight to live or will you live to die So it goes" (Unearth 31-32). One could argue that in this line there is a clear acceptance of death and a sense of futility in terms of fighting it. But, at the same time the song seems ...
