to the miserable situation in the Southern United States before the Civil War. However, the world of the 1800s was much different from the one we live in today, and slavery was widespread. Even so, I was surprised to learn that there was slavery in Brazil and that it wasnt officially ended until the late 1880s. This paper explores slavery in the area known as Minas Gerais, and the effect of slavery on the economy of the country. Structure of the Slave Owning Society When I think of slavery and the South, I always think of huge plantations with hundreds, if not thousands, of slaves to work them. Apparently, this model of slave society is a common one, but its not always accurate, either in the United States or in other countries. Slavery has been part of Brazil since the 1600s, particularly in the interior,1 and new studies of slaveholding in the Minas Gerais have revealed that "small slave-holders dominated the colonial extractive economy of Minas Gerais in the colonial and imperial period."2 It appears that the norm is not the large plantation, but the individual, who usually owned fewer than five slaves.3 Further, it appears it is the small slave-holders who dominate the picture, and that the figure of the miner with hundreds of slaves is a myth.4 The scholarly confusion may have arisen due to the disparity between the size of the land holdings and the way it was worked. In the northeast region (which grows sugar), the territorial holdings are in fact quite large, but they are not to be confused with agricultural holdings.5 The land was a source of power and wealth, but without workers, produced no income.6 If there was no free labor market ...
