it has been some time since slavery was in force, but some people might be surprised at how long it lasted in some states. To an extent, it was justified by slave owners, but by and large, the consensus is that slavery is really never morally justifiable. It is also interesting to delve into history and find that slavey existed in certain regions more than others. Even within Latin America, some nations embraced slavery and others did not, or at least not to the same degree as those that were heavily entrenched in the practice. And while many think of slavery as an old pastime, something that was done a long time ago and was stopped, it is really something that is not a large part of history. In fact, slavery only encompassed a few centuries where it seems that some governments and white people dominated a minority community. In fact, this is true of Latin America also. Prior to the fifteenth century, slavery was something that was only done on a small scale in Latin American nations (Klein, 1998). The more complicated societies would use "village agriculturalists" as well as artisans and they were considered peasants (1998 ). In the early years slaves actually performed the elite work and were servants within the household (1998). They would do the cooking and cleaning rather than plow the fields. Klein (1998) contends that "African slavery in Latin America and the Caribbean is a late development in the evaluation of slavery in human society" (p.1). In the Latin American nations where authoritarian rule was the norm, and that was not all nations, the slave trade is evident (Marthoz, 2000).
