and one of the states that provided a great deal of economic stability to the growing nation. It was also a state that utilized slaves in that economic, political, and social development. Like other colonies in the beginning, they began simply and then evolved over time, utilizing one cash crop or another. In addition, like other states in the union in the early days of the nation conditions and economics changed. Opinions and economic investment changed along with many other conditions. Virginia, perhaps one of the strongest colonies in the union, slowly altered as they entered into the 19th century. And, all of these realities and potential topics relate to the conditions of cash crops and slavery. The following paper examines the history of Virginia in relationship to slavery and cash crops, with a focus on the 18th century. The paper first examines cash crops and agriculture in Virginia and then discusses slavery. The paper then examines the two together. Cash Crops When Virginia was first explored, or written about, it seems that the plants and crops that could grow there were essentially endless and it is apparent that back then, in the 16th century, tobacco was already considered something of great worth. One author, Thomas Hariot, back in 1590, wrote A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land Of Virginia. In this book he noted that, "There is an herbe which is sowed a part by it selfe & is called by the inhabitants Vppowoc: In the West Indies it hath diuers names, according to the seuerall places & countries where it groweth and is vsed" Hariot, 1590).
