Human nature and society would be perfected through the application of the correct ideology, plus a little social engineering. Communism was not the only utopian scheme to crash and burn in this tumultuous century. Fascism and National Socialism (more commonly called Nazism) were similarly conceived as the political mortar for the construction of a heaven-on-earth, albeit one from which certain groups were to be violently excluded. Of course, not every utopian dream has turned into a nightmare. Many just faded into oblivion. But it is not too hard to understand how utopian thinking can rationalize despotism and brutality. Starting with a comparison of Thomas Mores Utopia and the economic proposition that the ends justifies the means, doesnt it follow, then, that even the most vile means are justified when the goal is the creation of paradise? Utopia is an old idea. Historians trace the notion back to at least 300 B.C., though the word itself was coined early in the 16th century when Sir Thomas More wrote this book. Its Greek roots mean - prophetically perhaps - nowhere. Mores new island Utopia was to be the highest state of the republic, a society governed by reason and fairness, rejecting greed and based on communism: the conviction that property should be held in common and that wealth should be distributed equally or according to need. It is worth considering that Mores utopianism, like some currently fashionable philosophies, has generally disdained the idea of equality without regard to factors like race (in the case of fascism) or class (in the case of communism).
